Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am a 24-year-old male and a few months ago, I observed some ring-shaped marks on the skin of my penis. These marks appeared suddenly and have the following characteristics: The edges of the rings are slightly raised. The skin inside the rings has a slightly red shade, similar to the edges. The marks vary in size, with some being larger and others smaller. There is a very light itch associated with these marks when they first appeared. There are no open wounds or discharge. The tip of my penis is clear and unaffected.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like you may have a condition called penile lichen planus, a non-infectious itchy rash that can cause purplish or pale ring-shaped areas. The key features pointing to this are:

1. Sudden appearance of ring-shaped marks

2. Slightly raised edges and reddish shade inside

3. Varying sizes of marks

4. Light itchiness

5. No open wounds or discharge

Lichen planus is not contagious and usually resolves within a year. However, it's still essential to confirm the diagnosis with a doctor to rule out other conditions. A physical exam and possibly a skin biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. Topical corticosteroids may help reduce symptoms. Make an appointment for an evaluation.

Thanks
