Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I just started wetting the bed yesterday, and I have epilepsy. Could this be considered incontinence? What might be causing it, and what can I do to manage it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Urinary incontinence in a patient with epilepsy is most likely related to seizure activity. Certain types of seizures, particularly generalized tonic-clonic seizures, can lead to loss of bladder control. However, other factors such as medication side effects, underlying neurological conditions, or an unrelated urinary issue could also contribute.

2. It’s important to follow up with your neurologist to evaluate whether your current medication levels are appropriate and whether your seizure type aligns with this symptom. A detailed review of your seizure history, a possible medication adjustment, or further testing may be needed to manage this effectively. If the issue persists, consulting a urologist may also be beneficial.

Thanks
