Hello Doctor,
I’ve had progressive muscle weakness for 3 years affecting multiple muscles. For the past 2 months, when I smile with my mouth closed, my upper lip rolls up and sticks to my gums for 3–15 minutes before going back to normal. My GP and dentist haven’t seen this before. Why does my upper lip behave like this, and what does it say about my muscle weakness?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.
1. Your description of progressive muscle weakness and the unusual behavior of your upper lip suggests involvement of the facial muscles, possibly due to a neuromuscular problem. The lip rolling up and sticking to your gums for minutes before returning to normal may indicate muscle weakness, abnormal muscle tone, or nerve involvement.
2. Conditions like myopathies, neuromuscular junction disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis), or nerve issues could cause these symptoms. Since this is uncommon, I recommend seeing a neurologist for a detailed exam and tests such as EMG and blood work to find the cause and guide treatment. Early evaluation is important to manage your symptoms effectively.
Thanks
