Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been taking 75mg of Lyrica (pregabalin) once a day before bedtime. Today is my last dose for the week, and I’m wondering if it’s okay to stop taking it now or should I gradually reduce the dosage? I’m not sure if I need to continue or take a break. Please advise.

Hello

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

The decision to stop taking pregabalin (Lyrica) should ideally be made in consultation with the doctor who prescribed it to you. While pregabalin is generally well-tolerated, abruptly discontinuing it, especially after prolonged use, could potentially lead to withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia, nausea, or headaches. However, if you have been taking it for a short period or on a low dose, the risks of stopping suddenly may be minimal. It's always best to follow the instructions provided by your prescribing doctor to ensure that you don’t experience any unwanted effects.

If you are considering stopping the medication, I would strongly recommend speaking with your doctor first. They may suggest tapering the dosage gradually, particularly if you've been taking pregabalin for a longer time. This process can help minimize any potential side effects or discomfort. Additionally, your doctor will be able to reassess your condition to determine if you still need the medication or if an alternative treatment might be more appropriate. It’s important to address any concerns with your healthcare provider to ensure a safe and effective transition off the medication.

Thanks
