Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I used to drink alcohol occasionally without any issues, but about 4 months ago, I took some heavy medication. I can't remember the exact medications, but since then, I've developed a sensitivity to alcohol. Even small amounts of alcohol make my heart rate increase, my eyes turn red, and I feel nauseous. This never happened before I took the medications. I have no issues eating anything else. Can someone suggest what I should do to resolve this? I believe it may be related to the medications I took that day.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Your symptoms could be due to several factors:

1. Liver Function: The medications you took may have affected your liver, compromising its ability to process alcohol. A liver function test (LFT) is recommended.

2. Impaired Alcohol Metabolism: Alcohol is broken down into acetaldehyde, and if your body can't process it properly, it can cause symptoms like nausea and increased heart rate.

3. Medication Interference: Some medications, like metronidazole or antifungals, can interfere with alcohol metabolism, even after discontinuing them.

4. Allergic Reaction: You could also be having an allergic reaction.

I recommend abstaining from alcohol and consulting with a doctor for further evaluation.

Thanks
