Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had sex six weeks ago, and now I'm experiencing skin peeling on my penis. Could this be a symptom of HIV? I also took PEP for 24 days, specifically Tenvir EM and Daruvir R 600. I'm really worried—should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Skin peeling on the penis is not a specific symptom of HIV. However, engaging in unprotected sex or sex with partners whose HIV status is unknown—even while taking PEP—still requires follow-up testing to confirm your status. PEP is highly effective when taken correctly, but it is not 100% guaranteed to prevent infection.

Since you had potential exposure, it is recommended to take an HIV test at the appropriate intervals—typically at 4 weeks and again at 3 months post-exposure—to ensure accurate results. Additionally, skin peeling could be due to other causes such as fungal infections, allergic reactions, or irritation from medication. A consultation with a doctor can help determine the exact cause and provide appropriate treatment.

Thanks
