Patient Question

Hello Doctor

Despite being sexually active with a partner who has tested positive for a sexually transmitted infection (STI), is it possible for the other partner to test negative.

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

 1. Timing of Testing: STI tests may not detect infections immediately after exposure. It takes time for the body to produce enough antibodies or for the infection to reach detectable levels.

 2. Type of STI: Each STI has varying incubation periods and detection windows. Some infections may take longer to show up on tests than others.

 3. Test Accuracy: While generally reliable, STI tests aren't 100% accurate. False negatives can occur, especially if the test is taken too early or if there are issues with the testing process.

 4. Individual Immune Response: Each person's immune system reacts differently to infections. One partner may clear the infection more effectively than the other, resulting in a negative test result.

 5. Safe Sex Practices: Regardless of test results, practicing safe sex through consistent condom use and open communication about sexual history is crucial to prevent STI transmission.

 6. Retesting: Both partners should consider retesting at a later date, especially if symptoms develop or if there's a known risk of exposure.

 7. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If there are concerns or questions about STI testing or prevention, consulting a healthcare provider is recommended for personalized advice and guidance.

Thanks
