Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been coughing up phlegm for about a month. I rested and took antibiotics, but I haven’t gotten any better. Additionally, I have been dealing with vaginal infections for the past three months. I need to mention that I had a blood clot before. Right now, my chest hurts, especially on the right side below my chest, and I also have pain in my back above my waist. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A prolonged cough lasting for a month, especially with phlegm, can be caused by several underlying conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or a chronic lung infection. Given your additional symptoms of chest pain, back pain, and your history of a blood clot, it is important to rule out any serious conditions, such as a lung infection or blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism).

The ongoing vaginal infections may also indicate an underlying immune or systemic issue that requires evaluation. I strongly recommend that you see your doctor as soon as possible for a thorough physical examination, blood tests, imaging studies like a chest X-ray, and any other investigations deemed necessary. Prompt medical evaluation will help identify the cause and ensure you receive the appropriate treatment.

Thanks
