Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm feeling quite anxious lately. I recently took a gen4 lab HIV Ab/Ag test, and I'm worried about the possibility of it giving a false negative result. It's been 37 days since a potential exposure, and I'm unsure about the accuracy of the test at this point. Could you please provide some insights into the likelihood of a false negative result occurring in such circumstances?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. In general, the chances of a false negative result on a gen4 lab HIV Ab/Ag test 37 days after exposure are relatively low. These tests are designed to detect the presence of HIV antibodies and antigens in the blood, which usually become detectable within a few weeks to a month after infection. However, it's essential to remember that no test is 100% accurate, and there is always a small margin of error.

2. That being said, the likelihood of a false negative result occurring 37 days after exposure is very slim, assuming the test was conducted correctly and there were no issues with sample handling or processing. However, it's essential to consider the possibility of a new exposure occurring after the initial test, as this could potentially impact the accuracy of the results.

Thanks
