Hello Doctor,
I’ve been in a relationship for almost three years, and recently my boyfriend contracted chlamydia. I haven’t been with anyone else, but I think I may have had it unknowingly. A few years ago, I tested positive for HSV2 after an outbreak, but my STD blood tests were negative. I later took an HSV2 test online, which came back positive. We’ve been having unprotected sex for almost three years, and now he doesn’t believe I didn’t know about the chlamydia. Can you help me explain this to him?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. I understand that this situation is very complicated, and it can be difficult to trace exactly where chlamydia might have come from. The most important thing to remember is that sometimes, even with long-term, committed relationships, one partner might unknowingly carry an infection without showing symptoms. In your case, it’s possible that you had chlamydia for a while without realizing it, as it can often be asymptomatic, especially in women.
2. I would recommend explaining to your boyfriend that while it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when or how chlamydia was contracted, the key now is to focus on treating the infection properly. Both of you should get the appropriate treatment, follow up with your healthcare providers, and take precautions to avoid future issues. Trust and communication are vital in relationships, and it’s essential to address this health matter together.
3. Let him know that while it’s difficult to prove where the infection originated, what matters now is that you're both on the same page regarding treatment and future prevention.
Thanks
