Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been diagnosed with a viral fever, and I'm currently taking paracetamol (PCM) to help manage my symptoms. Can you tell me what the maximum dose of PCM is that I can safely take during a viral fever?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I’m assuming that PCM refers to paracetamol (acetaminophen). The maximum recommended daily dose for paracetamol is 4 grams, which should be spread out throughout the day to avoid any liver damage. However, it's important to note that while paracetamol can help reduce fever, there's a concept called heat shock proteins, which assist in directing white blood cells to the site of infection. If you lower your body temperature too much with fever-reducing medications, it could interfere with this process, potentially prolonging your illness. So, while it's okay to take paracetamol as needed for comfort, try not to overly suppress the fever if it's not causing significant distress.

Thanks
