Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What is the typical frequency range for bowel movements in a toddler over the course of a day? I am interested in knowing the expected number of bowel movements that are considered normal for a healthy toddler.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Normally, a toddler passes 1-2 stools in a day, but it is also normal for them to pass 4-5 stools in a day or 1 stool every 6-7 days. However, if the stools are loose, excessively hard and painful to pass, or are accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal distension, etc., it is advisable for the toddler to visit their pediatrician.

Thanks
