Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My 7-year-old son suddenly experienced a sharp chest pain and shortly after his pulse rate shot up to 117 bpm. This lasted for about 10 minutes before he started feeling a bit better. Is this something I should be worried about, and what could be causing it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. To assess the situation properly, it’s important to gather a detailed history. First, I would like to know if the chest pain your son experienced was localized to a specific area or if it was more general. Did the pain seem to worsen when he coughed, or did any specific movements or changes in posture make it worse? These details can help determine if the pain is related to something like a musculoskeletal issue or if it might be related to the heart or lungs.

2. Given the rapid pulse rate of 117 bpm and the chest pain, I would strongly recommend consulting a GP as soon as possible. They will be able to perform a thorough physical examination and may recommend further tests, such as an ECG or a chest X-ray, if needed. If necessary, the GP will refer you to a specialist for further evaluation.

Thanks
