Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My 11-month-old has a high fever of 104°F, mucus in both eyes, fast breathing, and seems very sleepy. There’s no cough or chills, and she’s peeing fine for now. Should I take her to the ER, or can I monitor her at home?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. A fever of 104°F in an 11-month-old, especially with fast breathing and sleepiness, should be taken seriously. First, try to lower the fever by exposing the baby to light clothing and using a tepid sponge bath (lukewarm water, not cold). You can also give an appropriate dose of infant paracetamol to help bring the temperature down.

2. However, given the combination of symptoms especially fast breathing and lethargy, it is important to have the baby checked by a doctor as soon as possible. While viral infections can cause high fevers and mucus in the eyes, bacterial infections such as pneumonia or a more serious condition cannot be ruled out without an examination. If the baby’s breathing becomes more labored, she becomes difficult to wake, develops a rash, or has fewer wet diapers, seek emergency care immediately. Otherwise, take her to a doctor urgently to determine the cause of the symptoms.

Thanks
