Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Is it safe for infants to drink Silk soy milk as a beverage, considering their nutritional needs and the potential for allergens? I'm concerned about how it compares to breast milk or formula for their growth and development.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Soy milk can be low in important nutrients like fat, protein, calcium, and vitamin D, which are essential for your baby's growth and development. Additionally, soy is one of the top 8 allergens, so it can cause reactions in some infants. While soy milk may be recommended in certain cases, such as for babies with cow's milk allergy, it's important to note that if your baby is under 12 months old, you should stick to breast milk or age-appropriate formula for their nutritional needs. After 6 months, when your baby starts solid foods, you can introduce small amounts of soy in the form of yogurt or tofu, as part of a varied diet, while carefully monitoring for any allergic reactions.

Thanks
