Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

If a child is allergic to milk, can they consume lactose-free milk or Lactaid?

Answered by Dr. Amit Vatkar

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

While lactose-free milk and Lactaid are designed to help people with lactose intolerance, they are not suitable for individuals with a milk allergy.

A milk allergy is an immune response to the proteins found in milk, such as casein and whey, whereas lactose intolerance involves difficulty digesting lactose, a sugar in milk.

Lactose-free milk still contains these proteins, so it could trigger an allergic reaction in your child.

I recommend discussing alternative milk options with your pediatrician, such as plant-based milks, which may be safer for children with milk allergies.

Thanks
