Hello Doctor,

How many hours of sleep should an infant typically get in a day? I want to make sure my baby is getting enough rest.

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

The amount of sleep an infant needs can vary significantly depending on their age. Newborns, especially those under one month old, typically sleep anywhere from 14 to 20 hours a day. This extensive sleep is crucial for their growth and development, as it helps support their rapidly changing bodies and brains. As infants grow, their sleep patterns will gradually shift. By the time they reach around 3 to 6 months, most babies will sleep approximately 12 to 16 hours a day, often consolidating their sleep into longer stretches at night.

It's important to remember that each baby is unique, and their sleep needs may differ. Some infants may require a bit more or less sleep than the general guidelines suggest. If you notice that your baby is consistently fussy, overly sleepy, or has trouble sleeping, it may be helpful to discuss your concerns with a pediatrician.

Thanks
