Hello Doctor,
I have an SP catheter, and I usually empty the bag four times a day. I’m wondering if having the catheter connected to a shut-off valve would be a better option than using the bag. Could you explain the differences and which option might be better for me?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Using a shut-off valve with your SP catheter is generally not recommended because it can increase the risk of urosepsis, a serious infection. The closed system of the catheter with a bag helps ensure that urine is drained regularly, which reduces the chances of bacterial growth and infection. It’s important to follow the recommended care instructions to minimize risks and maintain your health.
Thanks
