Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m an older male, lean, diabetic, and I have a catheter in place. I’ve been experiencing bladder spasms that result in a sharp, intense pain in my penis. Sometimes, especially when I lie flat, these spasms seem to occur. Can you explain what might be causing these spasms, and is there anything I can do to reduce them?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Bladder spasms can be caused by a variety of factors, including irritation from the catheter, infection, or changes in bladder tone. In your case, it’s likely related to the presence of the catheter and possibly the underlying diabetes affecting nerve function.

2. To help relieve these spasms, an antimuscarinic medication, such as oxybutynin, may be effective.

3. This type of medication works by relaxing the bladder muscles and reducing the frequency and intensity of spasms.

4. I would recommend discussing this option with your healthcare provider to determine if it’s appropriate for you, and to rule out any potential underlying infections or other complications.

Thanks
