Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m an older male with diabetes and a catheter for bladder retention (3 liters). I experience painful bladder spasms, causing sharp pain in my penis, especially when lying flat. I’m looking for ways to reduce these spasms. I have oxybutynin chloride 5 mg and wonder if it's an antimuscarinic medication. I want to understand the cause of these spasms and explore other treatment options.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Bladder spasms can indeed be caused by the presence of a foreign body, such as the catheter balloon, which can irritate the bladder and lead to involuntary contractions. These spasms can result in sharp pain, as you’ve described.

2. Oxybutynin chloride, which you have, is an antimuscarinic medication that works by relaxing the bladder muscles, which can help reduce spasms. The typical dosage for oxybutynin is up to 30 mg per day, taken in divided doses. This may help alleviate the spasms you're experiencing.

3. It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider before adjusting your medication or dosage to ensure it’s appropriate for your specific situation. They can provide further guidance on managing your symptoms effectively.

Thanks
