Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently noticed a small bump on my inner labia. It's not really visible, but I can feel it when I touch the area. It’s a bit painful, feels like a hard ball under the skin, and it moves slightly when I press on it. I’m not sure what it could be. Should I be worried?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on your description, the bump on your inner labia could likely be a Bartholin gland cyst, a sebaceous cyst, or a fibrous nodule. These are usually not serious, but if it’s painful and feels like a hard, movable lump, it may be inflamed or infected.

2. A Bartholin cyst forms when the gland near the vaginal opening gets blocked. If infected, it can turn into an abscess, which is more painful and swollen. In many cases, a minor procedure is needed to drain it, especially if it doesn’t improve on its own. This is a simple and safe outpatient treatment.

3. In the meantime, you can try warm sitz baths (soaking in warm water for 10–15 minutes) to reduce discomfort. Avoid squeezing or pressing on it.

4. I recommend seeing a gynecologist soon for a proper exam and treatment. Early care can prevent complications and ease your symptoms faster.

Thanks
