Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling a tight sensation in my throat, especially when I’m eating or swallowing. It feels like my throat is really small, almost like I’m being choked. But after I finish eating, it gets even worse—like an amplified version of what I just described. My neck muscles become really tense, and even my tongue feels stiff, almost like I’m losing control over it. It’s an intense feeling, and it’s starting to worry me. What could be causing this?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Your symptoms may be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can cause throat tightness and swallowing difficulties. Lifestyle changes can help manage this condition:

1. Avoid spicy, acidic, and fried foods, caffeine, alcohol, and smoking.

2. Eat smaller meals and avoid eating 2-3 hours before bedtime.

3. Elevate your head while sleeping and maintain a healthy weight.

You can also try a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for a month to reduce acid production. If symptoms persist, consult an ENT specialist for an endoscopy to rule out other conditions.

Seek urgent care if you experience severe difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Thanks
