Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been diagnosed with both OCD and ADHD, and I’ve noticed that some of my family members seem to have similar traits. I’m wondering—can OCD and ADHD be inherited from ancestors? If so, how likely is it that my children might develop these conditions?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Yes, both OCD and ADHD have genetic components, but OCD has a stronger hereditary link. Studies show OCD is 45-65% heritable, meaning it often runs in families. ADHD is even more heritable, at 70-80%, though environmental factors also play a role.

2. Having a relative with OCD or ADHD increases the risk, but it doesn’t guarantee someone will develop the condition. Other factors, like stress and environment, also contribute. If you're concerned about inheritance, a doctor or genetic counselor can provide more guidance.

Thanks
