Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been diagnosed with epididymitis, and my doctor prescribed an IM shot of Ceftriaxone. Is this medication commonly used to treat this condition, and how effective is it? Also, are there any side effects I should watch out for?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Yes, an IM (intramuscular) ceftriaxone shot is indeed used to treat epididymitis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a single 500 mg dose of ceftriaxone is recommended for cases of acute epididymitis likely caused by sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea.

2. For cases not caused by STIs or involving more complex infections, a regimen of 1 gram of ceftriaxone administered every 12 hours via IM injection for 3 days may be appropriate. Your treatment plan may vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of your condition, so it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions.

3. Common side effects of ceftriaxone include soreness at the injection site, diarrhea, or mild allergic reactions. If you experience severe side effects like difficulty breathing or rash, contact your doctor immediately.

Thanks
