Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My foreskin is very tight and only pulls back slightly, so only a small part of the head is visible. When I get an erection, it sometimes hurts or feels itchy. What should I do?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like you may have phimosis, a condition where the foreskin doesn’t retract fully. Here’s what you can do:

Hygiene: Gently clean daily with warm water and mild soap. Dry well to avoid irritation.

Steroid Cream: A doctor may prescribe a mild corticosteroid to soften and loosen the foreskin.

Stretching: Once the skin is soft, try gentle daily stretching without causing pain.

Infection: If there’s redness, pain, or discharge, see a doctor for treatment.

Avoid Irritants: Skip perfumed soaps or powders in the genital area.

See a Doctor: If symptoms don’t improve, consult a healthcare provider. In some cases, minor procedures or circumcision may be needed.

Emergency: If the foreskin gets stuck behind the head and swells (paraphimosis), seek urgent care.

With proper care and follow-up, most cases improve without surgery.

Thanks
