Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently took an HIV test, and my result came back as 0.542 in s/c units. I understand that a result below 1.0 is considered NON-REACTIVE, meaning negative for HIV antibodies. Does this mean I am definitely HIV negative? Should I take any follow-up tests or precautions based on this result? Also, is there any chance that this could change over time or due to any factors?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A result of 0.542 in s/c units on an HIV test is considered NON-REACTIVE, indicating no HIV antibodies were detected, and the result is negative. However, if the test was taken within the window period (2 to 12 weeks after potential exposure), it might be necessary to retake the test after this period for confirmation. For further clarity, consult your healthcare provider and continue practicing safe precautions to prevent HIV transmission.

Thanks
