Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had anal sex a few days ago and developed irritation in my urethra, followed by urinary retention. I went to the ER, tested negative for STDs, and was prescribed doxycycline. I'm on day 5 of treatment, but some days I feel better, and other days the symptoms return. Am I on the right medication, or should I seek further treatment or tests?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. You are on the right medication with doxycycline, but a 5-day course may not be enough for complete resolution. Conditions like urethritis may require up to 30 days of treatment.

2. If symptoms persist or worsen, it could indicate the need for further tests or a change in treatment. Please follow up with your doctor or a urologist to reassess and consider any adjustments. Meanwhile, continue the doxycycline as prescribed, stay hydrated, and avoid sexual activity until fully cleared.

Thanks
