Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm curious about how long sperm can survive on the genital and penis skin areas. Recently, after I ejaculated, I didn't wash my penis. About 24 hours later, there was friction without clothing. I'm concerned if there is any risk of pregnancy in this situation?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Sperm can indeed survive for a limited time outside the body, but this survival depends on the environment. Typically, when sperm are on fabric or skin, they only survive for a few minutes. Therefore, the risk of pregnancy from sperm on the genital or penis skin area after 24 hours is extremely low. The short lifespan of sperm outside the body plays a significant role in reducing this risk.

However, it's crucial to practice good hygiene, especially after ejaculation. Washing the genital area after ejaculation can significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy in such scenarios. This simple step can help ensure that any residual sperm are removed, further minimizing the already low risk.

In summary, while there is a theoretical risk of pregnancy in such situations, the actual risk is very low due to the short lifespan of sperm outside the body. Practicing good hygiene and washing the genital area after ejaculation can further reduce this risk.

Thanks
