Hello Doctor,
I'm a 20-year-old male with no medical conditions. About 7-8 days ago, I heard a large flock of bats while biking, but didn’t see any. I wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time, and I’m worried since I’ve read that bats can bite without causing pain. I was vaccinated for rabies 10 months ago with five doses. Do I need a booster, or is my current vaccination still enough?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. It is very unlikely that you were bitten by bats, especially since you didn’t see them and weren’t in close proximity to them. Therefore, the risk of rabies is extremely low in your case. However, if you’re still feeling anxious, it is generally safe to receive a rabies booster vaccination.
2. You would typically receive 2 doses, 3 days apart, to ensure full protection. If you remain concerned, I recommend consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
Thanks
