Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Could I get rabies from smelling a bone that was chewed on by an animal with rabies?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Rabies is primarily transmitted through saliva, so simply smelling a bone chewed by a rabid animal is highly unlikely to transmit the virus.

2. However, if there are fresh traces of saliva on the bone and you have open wounds or mucous membranes in your nose, there could be a very small risk of transmission.

3. It's important to avoid contact with potentially infected animal saliva or tissues and seek medical advice if you have concerns about exposure to rabies.

Thanks
