Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I tested positive for pregnancy on Saturday morning, and the test indicated 1-2 weeks. Since then, I have taken additional pregnancy tests, but they are all coming back negative. I’m really confused and not sure what to do next. Could this mean a false positive, or is something else happening? Should I take another test or see a doctor?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Home pregnancy tests are presumptive; only an ultrasound can confirm pregnancy. A positive test followed by a negative one could indicate:

Chemical Pregnancy – An early miscarriage before ultrasound detection.

Testing Variability – Different test sensitivities or diluted urine can affect results.

Ectopic Pregnancy – Rare but can cause fluctuating test results; seek urgent care if you have pain or bleeding.

hCG Fluctuation – Dropping hormone levels may signal a non-viable pregnancy.

I recommend:

1. Retesting with first-morning urine.

2. Getting a blood test (beta hCG).

3. Consulting a doctor for an ultrasound.

Thanks
