Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I took 5 pregnancy tests, and all of them showed a very faint positive line. Today, I went to urgent care in Tillamook, Oregon, and a staff member there told me that the results of a pregnancy test can change overnight. I took the tests yesterday, and now I’m wondering if I need a blood test to confirm whether I’m pregnant or not. Can you help clarify if the faint line means anything or if I should rely on a blood test for confirmation?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Pregnancy tests are helpful screening tools but are not definitive for confirming a pregnancy. The results can sometimes be faint depending on factors like the timing of the test and the concentration of the hormone hCG in your urine. However, to accurately confirm a pregnancy, especially depending on how many weeks your period is late, the best approach is to have an abdominal ultrasound. This will allow us to confirm whether there is a pregnancy in the uterus or not. I strongly recommend that you see a midwife or, preferably, a gynecologist to get further clarification and assurance.

Thanks
