Hello Doctor,
I have some concerns regarding my partner's recent menstrual cycle. She had her period from October 25th to November 3rd. On November 10th, there was intimate contact where I ejaculated near her vagina. She took the emergency contraceptive pill (Unwanted 72) within 2 hours. Today, November 20th, she is experiencing brownish, thick, thread-like blood discharge. Could this be her monthly period or implantation bleeding? We are anxious about her pregnancy status. Can you please advise us on what to do?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
I understand that this situation has caused you both anxiety, but let's address your questions and concerns one by one.
Based on the details provided, the chances of pregnancy appear to be low. The timing of potential fertilization could have occurred around November 10th to 11th. Implantation bleeding typically presents as light red (fresh blood) and lasts for 1 or 2 days with minimal blood flow. Given the description of the bleeding your partner is experiencing, it may be related to the emergency contraceptive pill she took. This pill can cause the endometrium to dissolve and lead to an earlier-than-usual period.
Have you considered taking a pregnancy test? Modern urine tests, also known as early pregnancy tests, are highly sensitive and can detect the pregnancy hormone beta-hCG in the morning urine as early as two days before the expected period and up to 10 days after fertilization. Alternatively, a blood test conducted by a healthcare professional can provide a reliable result even earlier, typically seven to nine days after implantation.
If you are eager to confirm or rule out pregnancy, I recommend scheduling a consultation with a doctor for a blood test. It's essential to address any concerns promptly and seek appropriate medical guidance.
Thanks
