Hello Doctor,
I have a 15-year-old daughter with mild learning, fine motor, and speech delays. Before knowing I was pregnant, I went to an amusement park twice and rode roller coasters and water slides. Could this have caused her developmental issues, or is it likely due to something else?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. The rides and water park activities you engaged in before knowing you were pregnant are very unlikely to have caused the developmental challenges your daughter is experiencing. In most cases, brief physical activities like roller coasters or water slides do not directly impact fetal development, especially in the early stages of pregnancy.
2. Learning disabilities, fine motor delays, and speech difficulties can result from a variety of factors, including genetics, prenatal environment, birth complications, or unknown developmental variations. While placental issues can sometimes contribute to developmental concerns, they are usually associated with more severe pregnancy complications, such as restricted fetal growth or oxygen deprivation, which would likely have been noted during pregnancy or at birth.
3. If you are still concerned, speaking with a pediatrician, developmental specialist, or genetic counselor could help determine any underlying causes. However, from what you’ve described, it is highly unlikely that your amusement park visits were a contributing factor.
Thanks
