Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently discovered that I am pregnant after missing my period for two weeks. I had taken the levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pill, but it seems that it didn't work, and I am now about 5 weeks pregnant. However, I have been bleeding for 5 days, similar to a regular period. The bleeding has been heavy, filling about two pads per day with dark red blood and the usual period clots. I have also experienced cramps and lower abdominal pain. On the fifth day, the bleeding stopped, and now I no longer have any pain or symptoms. What could this be? Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on your symptoms, it's important to consult with a specialist to ensure proper evaluation. While some bleeding can occur early in pregnancy, it's essential to rule out any complications such as an ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound will help confirm whether the pregnancy is intrauterine (inside the uterus) and not in the fallopian tubes or elsewhere. Please schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible for an ultrasound and further examination. This will help ensure your health and the health of your pregnancy are closely monitored.

Thanks
