Hello Doctor,
I am currently in my first trimester of pregnancy and have been experiencing pain in my lower abdomen and lower back, particularly worsening at night. I have my first ultrasound appointment scheduled for August 27th. I am concerned about these symptoms – are they typical for the first trimester, or could they indicate a more serious issue? The two-week wait until my appointment is causing me significant worry. Thank you for any insight or advice you can provide.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Pain in the lower abdomen and back during the first trimester can be common as your body adjusts to pregnancy changes. However, it’s important to rule out other potential causes. You may need to be checked for a urinary infection, which is common in early pregnancy. If the pain is mild, it may be related to pregnancy changes, but if the back pain is severe, it’s important to investigate other possibilities such as a slipped disc, muscular spasm, or ligament strain. You can apply analgesic creams for temporary pain relief until a doctor can examine the cause. Additionally, drinking plenty of fluids can support urinary flow while waiting for urine analysis and culture results. Depending on the findings, urinary antibiotics and analgesics may be prescribed.
