Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 4 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. My doctor prescribed Metronidazole vaginal gel for treatment. I am concerned about whether it is safe to use during pregnancy. Could you please advise if this medication is safe for me to take at this stage of my pregnancy?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Yes, Metronidazole vaginal gel is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy, especially when prescribed for bacterial vaginosis. However, it is always important to follow your healthcare provider's instructions and inform them about your pregnancy. While studies suggest that the medication does not pose significant risks to the fetus, it is always best to consult with your doctor to ensure that it is the most appropriate treatment for your situation. If you experience any unusual side effects or have concerns, contact your doctor immediately.

Thanks
