Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My wife is 27 years old and currently 39 weeks pregnant. Her doctor has advised her to undergo a cesarean section due to concerns about the umbilical cord being around the neck and reduced amniotic fluid. However, she has been suffering from a persistent cough, and we're unsure if it's safe for her to go through surgery under these conditions. Given the urgency of the situation, could you please guide us on whether it is safe for her to proceed with the cesarean despite the cough?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

In situations like this, the best course of action is to follow the advice of the treating physician, obstetrician, and anesthesiologist. Their decision will be based on the condition of both the mother and the baby, as well as how labor is progressing. Generally, when there is reduced amniotic fluid and the umbilical cord is around the neck, it can put the baby in distress, making an urgent cesarean section necessary, especially if labor is progressing or if the situation is critical.

Thanks
