Heavy Bleeding at 4 Weeks Pregnant – Should I Be Worried?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm about 4 weeks pregnant, and I woke up at 3 AM to heavy, bright red bleeding with clots, almost like a period. Before going to bed, I only had light pink spotting that didn’t even fill my pad. My pregnancy has already been painful, and now I’m really worried about what’s happening. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s important that you see a specialist as soon as possible to assess whether there are any pregnancy-related complications, such as a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or molar pregnancy. Heavy bleeding with clots at 4 weeks can be concerning, and immediate medical evaluation is necessary. A scan is urgently needed to check the status of the pregnancy and determine the cause of the bleeding. Please seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Thanks
