Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had unprotected sex on October 7, 2024, and I tested positive with a faint line on a pregnancy test three days later. However, I’ve taken several more tests since then, and they are all coming back negative. What could be going on?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

To confirm the diagnosis, I recommend having an ultrasound scan performed while your bladder is full. This type of imaging is crucial, as it can help determine whether you are experiencing an early pregnancy or a pregnancy-related condition, such as an ectopic pregnancy.

An early pregnancy might show a gestational sac in the uterus, while an ectopic pregnancy could reveal the presence of the embryo in an abnormal location, often in the fallopian tube. Early detection is important, as ectopic pregnancies can lead to serious complications if not addressed promptly.

In addition to the ultrasound, your healthcare provider may suggest a series of blood tests to measure your hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels. Monitoring these levels can provide insight into whether your pregnancy is progressing normally.

If your hCG levels are not rising as expected, it may indicate a potential issue. It’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance tailored to your specific situation.

Thanks
