Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been experiencing nausea and vomiting early in the morning, a growing belly, food aversions, bloating, and mood swings for the past 4 months. My last intercourse was on the 19th of August, and I recently took a serum pregnancy test, which came back negative. My periods have been scanty since then. A sonographer checked only the lower part of my abdomen and concluded that they didn’t see a fetus. Could it be possible that the sonographer didn't check thoroughly enough? Is there still a chance I could be pregnant despite the negative test and ultrasound result?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It is possible that the pregnancy was missed during the ultrasound, especially if the sonographer only examined the lower part of your abdomen. To confirm the diagnosis, I recommend getting another pregnancy test and also undergoing a transvaginal ultrasound for a more thorough examination. It’s important to rule out other possibilities, such as a molar or ectopic pregnancy. The best way to confirm the pregnancy is through a detailed scan, so ensure that it is performed by a trained and experienced doctor.

Thanks
