Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

In my first pregnancy, I had a baby with neural tube defects. I'm wondering if there's a chance I could have the same problem in my second pregnancy. Should I be concerned about it happening again?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Yes, the risk of neural tube defects can be higher in a subsequent pregnancy if you've had one before. It's important to plan carefully and work closely with your healthcare provider. You should also consider having an early ultrasound and other screenings to monitor the development of the baby. Taking folic acid supplements as recommended can also help reduce the risk, so be sure to discuss this with your doctor.

Thanks
