Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently took a home pregnancy test, and it came out positive, but when I had a blood test done, the result was negative. Can I still be pregnant?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Yes, it is possible to still be pregnant despite the negative blood test. In some cases, a positive home pregnancy test can indicate pregnancy, even if a blood test result is negative. One possibility is an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, which can sometimes cause abnormal test results.

2. I recommend getting a transvaginal ultrasound scan as the next step. This will help to determine the location of the pregnancy and ensure everything is progressing properly.

Thanks
