Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm currently four months pregnant, and I recently underwent a cannabis test which came back positive. I must confess, I've been using cannabis to help stimulate my appetite. My biggest concern now is whether authorities will take my baby away from me due to this positive test result. Alternatively, is there a possibility that they will give me some time to prove that I can stop using cannabis?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

First and foremost, it's crucial to address the use of cannabis during pregnancy. While I understand that you've been using it to help stimulate your appetite, it's essential to recognize that cannabis use during pregnancy can potentially pose risks to both you and your unborn baby.

Research studies have indicated that cannabis use during pregnancy may be associated with adverse outcomes, including low birth weight and developmental issues in the child. Therefore, it is generally recommended that pregnant women abstain from using cannabis to mitigate these potential risks.

Now, regarding your concerns about the authorities taking your baby away or giving you time to prove that you can stop using cannabis, it's essential to approach this situation proactively. While every case may vary depending on individual circumstances and local regulations, taking steps to discontinue cannabis use as soon as possible can be beneficial.

By ceasing cannabis use, you not only reduce potential risks to your own health but also promote the well-being of your baby. Additionally, demonstrating your commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of your child can positively influence how authorities perceive your situation.

In summary, it is imperative to prioritize the health and well-being of both you and your baby during pregnancy. By discontinuing cannabis use and seeking support to address any underlying reasons for its use, you take significant steps towards ensuring a healthy pregnancy and a positive outcome for your child.

Thanks
