Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I hope you can help me with my concern. I had unprotected sex on the first day of my period and took emergency contraceptive pills right after. However, my period stopped three days later, and I'm feeling anxious about the possibility of being pregnant. Could this be a sign of pregnancy, or is it normal for my period to change after taking the pills?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Taking emergency contraception right after unprotected sex is an effective way to significantly reduce the chance of pregnancy. If your period stopped three days later, this could be a side effect of the emergency contraceptive pill, as these medications can cause temporary changes in your menstrual cycle, including altering the timing or flow of your period.

Based on what you've described, it’s unlikely that you are pregnant. However, if you still have concerns or if your next period is significantly delayed, I recommend taking a pregnancy test for reassurance.

Thanks
