Can You Get Pregnant on Mirena? Signs to Watch For!

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm on the Mirena IUD and had unprotected sex two weeks ago. I've noticed brown/pink discharge, which is mucus-like but doesn’t have a strong smell. My periods are usually irregular, so I’m not sure if this is normal. My stomach seems a little bigger, and I’ve been urinating more frequently this week. Could I be pregnant?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. A pregnancy is unlikely with the Mirena IUD, but it is not impossible. The symptoms you describe—brown/pink discharge, abdominal bloating, and frequent urination—could be related to hormonal changes, the IUD itself, or other underlying conditions. To confirm the diagnosis, you will need a detailed scan, such as an ultrasound, to check for pregnancy or any other possible causes like ovarian cysts, hormonal imbalances, or an infection.

2. It’s best to consult a gynecologist who can evaluate your symptoms, discuss the findings with you, and guide you on the next steps based on the results. If you experience severe pain, fever, or heavy bleeding, seek immediate medical attention.

Thanks
