Hello Doctor,
I’m 7 weeks pregnant, and my doctor told me I have an anembryonic pregnancy. Does this mean there was never a baby at all? I'm really confused and need to understand what this means.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Yes, an anembryonic pregnancy, also known as a blighted ovum, is an early pregnancy where a gestational sac forms, but the embryo does not develop or stops developing very early. This means that while pregnancy initially started, the baby did not form as expected. It is often due to chromosomal abnormalities, and in most cases, the body will naturally recognize this and lead to a miscarriage. If you have concerns, your doctor may recommend follow-up ultrasounds or discuss options for management.
Thanks
