Hello Doctor,
I’ve recently bitten down on my tongue due to dental pain a day or two ago, and today I woke up in pain. The bump has gotten bigger, and it feels like my tongue doesn’t fit in my mouth because it’s on the right side and a little swollen.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the response to your query below:
It sounds like you may have a swollen tongue from biting it, which can be quite uncomfortable. To help reduce the swelling and manage the pain, there are several steps you can take. Start by rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) a few times a day to keep the area clean and minimize swelling. Applying a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek near the swollen area can also help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Staying hydrated is essential for healing, so make sure to drink plenty of water. Avoid irritating foods like spicy, hot, or acidic items, as they can aggravate the swollen area. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and inflammation, while topical oral gels containing benzocaine can offer temporary relief. Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing to avoid further irritation, and maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth gently and considering the use of a mouthwash.
If the swelling and pain persist or if you notice signs of infection like increased redness, warmth, or pus, it is advisable to see a healthcare provider or dentist. They can assess the injury and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include antibiotics if an infection is present.
