Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently reviewed my kidney function test (KFT) results and noticed that my uric acid level is 6.01 mg/dl, which is above the normal range of 2.4-5.7 mg/dl. Additionally, my urea/creatinine ratio is 28.61, below the normal range of 40-100. I'm concerned about what these values might mean for my kidney health.

Could you please explain their significance and suggest any dietary recommendations to help bring these values back to normal and improve my kidney function?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Concerning your elevated uric acid levels, this suggests a need to adjust your diet. I recommend reducing your intake of animal products, particularly red meat, organ meats, and seafood, as these are rich in purines, which can contribute to high uric acid levels.

2. Additionally, limiting sugary drinks, alcohol, and processed foods may help.

3. For your urea/creatinine ratio, a value below the normal range can sometimes indicate issues such as protein intake imbalances or hydration levels. Staying well-hydrated and consuming balanced meals can support kidney health. However, it’s important to interpret these results alongside other clinical factors. I advise scheduling a follow-up consultation to assess your overall kidney function and create a personalized plan.

Thanks
