Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My 70-year-old aunt has had a urinary catheter in place for the last year, and recently, she had a silicone catheter inserted. About a week ago, there was blood in the catheter bag, but the bleeding stopped. Now, we are noticing small blood clots in her urine. Is this something to be concerned about, or is it normal?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s important for your aunt to consult with a urologist. The presence of blood clots in the urine may indicate a need to rinse the bladder, which can help clear any blockage or debris. The urologist will assess her condition and determine the appropriate treatment to ensure her catheter and urinary system are functioning properly.

Thanks
